A modern take on an old technique. Bringing a creative way to share images and memories.

What is a Lithophane?

A modern take on an old art form.

Derived from the Greek word lithos, meaning stone or rock, and phainein, meaning “to cause to appear.” The word lithophane came to mean “light in stone.”

Originally, llithphanes were carved into stone panels or molded into porcelain panels. When illuminated from behind an image would appear in the stone.

Today, we can take a digital (or digitized) image and convert it black and white, then use the greyscale vaules to create a “depth map” that is used to generate a 3D model. When printed, the varying depth of the model creates different levels of translucency which reproduces those greyscale values of the image.

Lithophane Boxes

Have some photos you need a creative way to display? Looking for a different way to show off wedding or baby photos? Our lithophane lamp box is a great way to make a nice statement piece from your images.

Each box can have four lithopane panels. They are illuminated with dimmable LEDs. The box lid can be embossed text.

Lithophane Nightlights

Are you afraid of the dark? Do you know a child that is afraid of the dark? Want to add a fun touch to a nursery, playroom or child’s bathroom? We can take your favorite images or even your artwork and turn it into a nightlight. The moon can always come up at night if you like.

Lithophane Panels

We can make individual lithophane panels from images. This is a great option if you want to create a collage or light box of images, or just want one to sit in your window. We also offer stands for panels with and without LED lights.

Other shapes

We can make lithophanes in a variety of other shapes and we are happy to talk to you about your specific needs. We can do almost anything from keychains to ornaments, vases to lampshades. We are really only limited by the physics of what is printable, and the size of our printers.
